Video Games and Your Child

If your child spends a lot of time playing video games, using a smartphone, or tablet they might not be getting the recommended amount of physical activity in a day (at least 60 minutes).  Many studies have been done showing the negative effects these activities can have on our overall health.

If you want to attempt to reduce your child’s screen time there are resources available to help.  First, educating yourself on the effects of screen time will help you to decide how to talk to your child about your plans to help them cut back (Source).   This chart will allow you to track exactly how much time your child is spending in front of the screen, and can help to guide your plan.  There are also many tips out there on what to do!

Reducing screen time might not be an option for you, but there are ways to ensure that your child is still moving.  Gaming systems like the Wii encourage movement and exercise in many of their games. Pokemon Go is a great way to get your student outside and moving.  If all else fails, maybe set a timer and have your child take a movement break every 30 minutes.  There are a variety of other apps available for download on a tablet. These include Toca Dance, NFL Play 60, Sworkit Kids, Super Stretch Yoga, Fitness Kids, and Iron Kids.  These will allow your child to continue to use a tablet, but in a fun and more active way.
